Lee Jaffe, a cross-disciplinary visual artist, musician, and poet, took photos of his friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, when they travelled abroad in 1983. As a photographer, Jaffe had a connection to Basquiat, and their time spent together resulted in an archive of imagery that captured one of the art world s true legends through an unfiltered and authentic lens. Clyfford Still (1904-1980) is a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, along with Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Willem de Kooning. This revelatory book, accompanying a groundbreaking exhibition, investigates Clyfford Still's late work, both in painting and in drawing, made after his move to rural Maryland in 1961. This marks a particularly fertile period for Still; he made over 375 works on canvas and a staggering 1,100 works on paper in Maryland before his death in 1980 at the age of 75. Given Still's especially reclusive posture later in life and the fact that none of the artworks in Still's estate were exhibited or made available to anyone before the opening of the Clyfford Still Museum in 2011, a full-scale presentation of these forty paintings and thirty works on paper is especially meaningful.

Whether utilizing bleach, organic matter, or even live insects, Barceló's Neo-Expressionist oeuvre explores decomposition, light, and the natural landscape. Born in 1957 in Majorca, Spain, he credits the influence of Lucio Fontana. His work is both abstract and cerebral, as evidenced by his broad range of paintings, ceramics, and installations. In 2011 Barceló exhibited his sculpture in New York's Union Square. The artist, who is currently living and working in Paris and Majorca, has works in the collections of the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid, among others.

In the 2000s, California-based painter Wayne Thiebaud began focusing on a series of mountain paintings, a subject he had first addressed in the 1960s and 1970s. Carrie Moyer consciously centres her painting as a practice about painting, with history as a subtext. Known for her incursions into Colour Field painting, Moyer also traces her influences to iconic female artists of the twentieth century, such as Georgia O Keeffe, and surrounding questions of taste, once quipping of her paintings that [Helen] Frankenthaler and [Fernand] Leger met in a dark corner and had Elizabeth Murray. Moyer s complex work merges abstract aesthetics and legible imagery: vividly coloured and textured forms are embedded with a range of historical, stylistic, and physical references to Surrealism, Modernism, 1960s and 70s counterculture graphics, and 70s feminist art. Moyer often works on the floor, pouring, rolling, stippling, mopping the paint, and embellishing with glitter. An exploration of acrylic s unique properties is a driving force in her work. Beginning as an intern at HERESIES, the pioneering feminist art magazine, Moyer has also engaged in critical practices beyond the studio.
